Restricting editable sections

Is there a way (via CSS?) to have read-only sections of a HTML chunk when editing? I thought I'd seen this implemented before, probably in another editor similar to Xinha. Basically I have a page template where I don't want certain parts of the page to be editable - although the ability to toggle the page as partial and all editable would be useful for maintenance.

This is surely something loads of people want.

I thought I'd seen this implemented before, probably in another editor similar to Xinha.

If you find out which editor this was I'd be greatly interested in how they did it

That would be complex to write, and in no way reliable.
