IE 8 and selection/focus issue

Hello,
I'm having an issue that seems to be related to IE 8.  I'm using xinha as an editor to grade papers.  I have added a comment box next to editor which allows me to select text from the editor, enter my comment in the box, click an "Add" button, then the highlighted words are wrapped around a span with a comment id, the comment is entered into a db, and when the document is displayed in HTML, the user can mouse over and view the comments.
This works great in Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera.  When it comes to IE, however, I select the text, then when I focus on the textarea to enter my comment, the text that I selected is then unselected.  Now, I enter the comment, THEN select the text, THEN push the button and it works, but I would love to have a common way of entering data.  Anyone know of this problem and maybe have a workaround/solution?
