Insert links from database

Hi
I'm working on my own CMS system and have a problem with linking.
I want to have two options when one click the Link button.
I want to add an option where the user can select an url from an drop down menu genereted from a database.
My problem is how to get the right data back to the editor. I believe I have to create a new var e.g. f_href_Ex, but how do I pass the var f_href_Ex to the editor? I only get <a>txt</a>
