TableOperations: How to select multiple cells in table when using IE?

I am using the TableOperations plugin and try to select multiple cells in a table, to merge the selected cells.

In Firefox everything works fine

On IE6 I cannot select cells, but just the text they contain. And pressing the merge cells button just reports "Please select table cell"

Isn't multicell select (i.e. table cell merge) supported for IE, or did I missed something?

No, selecting cells really isn't possible in IE. No way to work around this (thus the strange solution with the input boxes)
