Automaticly parse text smilies?

I can click & insert smilies with the appropriate plugin, but what if a user wants to just type in :) ?  Is there a way to make Xinha parse that into the appropriate smiley image on submit, without needing server-side processing?  I would think the existing find & replace functionality could probably be adapted for that, but I don't know JS and have no idea where to begin...
