Terminology : CSS1Compat and BackCompat

Could someone please tell me what theese two are and their difference, I see they are mentioned here and there but I havnt quite understood what they are? Maby some of you can explain it to me?

These are the strings returned by document.compatMode

CSS1Compat is "standards compliant mode"
BackCompat is "quirks mode"

for both browsers.
