Using editor in textmode

I need to allow users to edit plain text as well as HTML.
I want to create a Xinha editor with a limited toolbar (copy/past/redo) but notice that all buttons are disabled when you setMode to textmode.
Is there a way around this?

The majority of buttons will not work in text mode, textmode is just a plain textarea, not a contentEditable iframe.
