Text Formating - eg bold - intermittent

I'm using the latest xinha here plugin to firefox 1.5 on XP sp2.

Sometimes the text formatting buttons will change the text to e.g. bold, other times they seem completely dead and the text remains unchanged. 

Is there a work-around?
